Anti Gravity Press Overview

The anti gravity press builds strong shoulders using your own weight. It works your shoulders, the muscles that cap your arms. It also uses your triceps and abs. You need a suspension trainer with two handles. You face away from the anchor and lean forward to press. You set how hard it is by how far you lean. This makes it easy to fit your level. It builds pressing strength without any weights. The anti gravity press suits people who know a basic push-up. Use it on a shoulder day or a push day. It is a smart way to train with just straps.

What Is The Point of the Anti Gravity Press?

The anti gravity press builds shoulder strength using your body weight at an angle. It hits your shoulders hard while your core works to keep you stable.

How To Do The Anti Gravity Press

  1. Set the TRX or suspension trainer straps to about mid-length. Face away from the anchor point with a handle in each hand.
  2. Extend your arms out in front of you and walk your feet back so you are leaning forward at roughly a 45-degree angle. The more you lean, the harder the exercise becomes.
  3. Set your body in a straight line from head to heels, like a moving plank. Squeeze your glutes and brace your core so your hips do not sag or pike.
  4. Position your hands in front of your shoulders with your arms straight. This is your starting position, with your body angled and your core tight.
  5. Take a breath and keep your whole body rigid. The straps are unstable, so your core and shoulders must work overtime just to hold you steady.
  6. Lower yourself by bending your elbows, letting your body travel forward and down toward your hands. Keep your body straight the whole way, moving as one unit.
  7. Descend under control until your hands are near your shoulders or chest, feeling the stretch in your shoulders and chest. Do not let your hips pike up or sag down.
  8. Press back up by extending your arms, driving through your palms and pushing your body back to the starting angle. Keep your core locked so nothing bends at the hips.
  9. Maintain that rigid plank line throughout and control every rep. Work for controlled reps in the 8 to 15 range, and make it harder by walking your feet back further.

Anti Gravity Press Form Tips

  1. Keep your body straight like a plank. Do not let your hips sag.
  2. Pull your belly tight and squeeze your glutes. This holds your body stiff.
  3. Bend and press only at your elbows. Keep your body still.
  4. Lower slow and controlled. Do not drop fast.
  5. Keep your elbows in a steady path. Do not let them flare wide.
  6. Breathe in as you lower. Breathe out as you press.
  7. Grip the handles firm. This keeps you steady.
  8. Keep your neck long and in line. Do not drop your head.
  9. Push all the way up. Straighten your arms each rep.

Common Mistakes to Avoid for the Anti Gravity Press

  1. Letting your hips sag toward the floor. When your core gives out and your hips drop, your lower back takes the strain and you lose the plank line. Squeeze your glutes and brace hard so your body stays a straight, rigid unit.
  2. Piking your hips up to make it easier. Hiking your hips into a pike takes the load off your shoulders and chest and cheats the press. Keep a straight line from head to heels and refuse to bend at the waist.
  3. Flaring your elbows straight out to the sides. A wide elbow flare on the straps stresses the shoulder joint and weakens your press. Keep your elbows tracking at a moderate angle, tucked closer to your body.
  4. Choosing too aggressive a lean before you are ready. A steep forward lean makes the press very hard, and jumping into it leads to collapsing form. Start more upright and only walk your feet back as your strength and control improve.
  5. Rushing the reps and bouncing. The straps punish sloppy speed, and bouncing takes tension off the muscles while risking a slip. Move slowly and control both the lowering and the pressing phase.
  6. Not going through a full range. Cutting the descent short keeps you from loading the shoulders and chest in the stretched position. Lower until your hands are near your shoulders for a full, productive range.
  7. Letting your body twist or the handles wobble unevenly. Allowing one side to drift means your stabilizers are losing the fight and your form is breaking. Keep even tension in both handles and hold your body square.
  8. Losing shoulder engagement at the bottom. Sinking into your shoulders with loose, disengaged blades exposes the joint. Keep your shoulders set and your chest proud so the joint stays protected.
  9. Forgetting to brace your core continuously. Even for a split second, a loose core lets your spine sag under the load. Keep your abs and glutes tight from the first rep to the last.
  10. Holding your breath through hard reps. A locked breath under an unstable load leaves you shaky and lightheaded. Exhale as you press and reset your breath at the top.
  11. Setting the straps at a bad length. Straps too long or too short change the geometry and can make the movement awkward or unsafe. Set them to about mid-length so the handles clear the floor and track cleanly.

Anti Gravity Press Workout Tips

  1. Think of your body as one rigid plank the whole time. Holding that straight line from head to heels is what turns this into a genuine shoulder and core challenge.
  2. Adjust the difficulty with your foot position. Walking your feet back and increasing your lean makes it harder, while stepping forward toward upright makes it easier, so dial it to your level.
  3. Squeeze your glutes and brace your core continuously. That full-body tension keeps your hips from sagging or piking and protects your lower back.
  4. Keep your elbows at a moderate angle, not flared wide. Tucking the elbows keeps the shoulders safe and lets you press with more strength.
  5. Move slowly and control every rep. The straps reward control and punish momentum, so own both the descent and the drive back up.
  6. Use a full range of motion. Lowering until your hands are near your shoulders loads the chest and delts in the stretch, which is where much of the benefit lives.
  7. Keep even tension in both handles. Fighting to keep the straps steady is what builds the shoulder stability this movement is known for.
  8. Program it on a push day or as accessory work. It trains the pressing muscles while demanding serious core and stabilizer work, so it complements heavier presses well.
  9. Work in the 8 to 15 rep range for 3 to 4 sets. Since the load is your bodyweight and the challenge is stability, moderate reps with strict form suit it best.
  10. Start more upright and progress the lean gradually. Building up your angle over time is how you add difficulty safely without your form collapsing.
  11. Keep your shoulders set and chest proud at the bottom. Guarding against sinking into your shoulders keeps the joint healthy under the unstable load.
  12. Exhale as you press back up. Blowing air out on the effort helps you brace harder and keeps you from getting lightheaded.
  13. Film yourself from the side. A quick video instantly shows whether your body is staying straight or your hips are sagging or piking.
  14. Use it to build pressing strength when you have no weights. All you need is a suspension trainer, making it great for home or travel workouts.
  15. Make sure your anchor is rock solid. A suspension trainer is only as safe as what it is attached to, so check the anchor before you load it.
  16. Be patient with the progression. As your core and shoulders get stronger, you will be able to lean further and press from tougher angles over time.
