How To Do The Cable Hip Adduction

  1. Attach an ankle cuff to the low pulley of a cable machine and set a light weight to start. Secure the cuff snugly around the ankle of the leg you plan to work.
  2. Stand sideways to the machine so the working leg is the one closest to the stack. Grab the frame or a handle with your near hand for balance and stand tall.
  3. Step out to the side so the working leg gets pulled outward, creating tension and a light stretch in your inner thigh. This is your starting position.
  4. Keep your standing leg slightly bent and plant that foot firmly for a stable base. Brace your core so your torso stays upright and quiet.
  5. Pull your working leg across the front of your body in a smooth arc, driving from the inner thigh. Keep the leg fairly straight, leading with the whole leg rather than swinging from the knee.

  6. Leaning heavily on the machine frame. Hanging your body weight on the support hand takes the load off your legs and core. Use the frame for light balance only and stay tall on your own base.
  7. Letting the standing leg lock out stiff. A rigid, locked standing leg makes your base wobbly and stresses that knee. Keep a soft bend in the standing knee for a stable, athletic stance.
  8. Skipping the eccentric on the way out. Letting the cable yank the leg back fast throws away the lowering phase, which builds plenty of muscle. Resist the pull and control the leg back to the stretched position.
  9. Not squeezing at the end of the arc. Simply touching the leg across and letting it swing back skips the peak contraction. Squeeze the adductors hard when the leg crosses in front for the best stimulus.

  9. Match both legs for even work. Start with your weaker side and let it set the rep count, since one strong side can quietly create an imbalance.
  10. Chase the mind-muscle connection. Thinking about squeezing your inner thigh to move the leg makes this smaller muscle work far harder than just going through the motion.
  11. Use it to support your bigger lifts. Strong adductors help stabilize your squats, lunges, and sprints, so this is useful accessory work, not just a shaping move.
  12. Keep your torso tall and quiet. A still upper body forces the inner thigh to do the job instead of your whole body swinging.
  13. Add it near the end of a leg day. It works well as accessory or finisher work once your big compound lifts are done.
  14. Progress with small weight jumps or extra reps. Overload the adductors gradually so form stays clean and the joint stays happy.
  15. Fasten the ankle cuff snugly. A secure cuff just above the ankle bone gives a smooth pull and stops the strap from digging in.
  16. Do not chase failure with sloppy reps. When your torso starts twisting to help, the set is done, so stop or lighten the weight.
